Free Activities in NYC

New York City, other than being the city that never sleeps is also an excellent vacation destination. If you're considering a New York Vacation but worried about the selection or availability of great family activities in which to participate, let me put your mind to rest. There are many family activities in New York City that will appeal to all ages from toddlers to teens. Some of these great activities are surprisingly easy on the pocketbook despite New York City's reputation for being an expensive place to live and/or visit.

There are many ways the careful planner can enjoy many of this great cities attractions for little or no cost. Most museums offer free admission one night or day each week. Check around and plan your trip to that particular museum on the free days and evenings. Additionally, several of the museums offer a 'pay what you wish' policy, which allows you to offer a donation for entrance rather than having a set price that would exclude many from visiting. Visiting museums are a great way for everyone in your family to gain some cultural insight from their New York City visit while the free nights make this experience rather easy on the pocketbook.

In addition to these museums you can also experience the technology of tomorrow at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab at no cost or take a stroll down the boardwalk of Coney Island. In the winter, try ice-skating in Rockefeller Center. If you have the time and inclination Queens County Farm Museum offers free admission (with the exception of special events so be sure to check) and provides the family with a step back in time.

To really take a bite out of the Big Apple try the market at Union Square Green Market. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables you will find all kinds of yummy goodies to eat and drink. There are also many walking tours some guided (these tend to cost money) and many self guided tours you can take through the neighborhoods of New York as well as some historic walking tours.

For a truly historical experience visit Federal Hall National Memorial. Admission is free and you will be able to view American History at its core. This is the place where George Washington took the oath of office and our form of democracy was born. For any American history buff or school aged child this is one of the must see freebies available in New York City. Other national parks in New York City that are of interest historically include Ellis Isle, the Statue of Liberty, Grant's Tomb, and Fort Wadsworth. Each of these parks offer free admission to the general public and make a great place for the entire family to not only visit and enjoy but also to learn about our history.

Wave Hill is another great place to visit. This tour is free during the week otherwise is it $4 for adults and $2 for children. Regardless of whether you go during the week or on the weekend it is still an excellent value for the price of your visit.

Of course this is only a small sample of the many free and low priced things to do in this great city. You will definitely want to wear comfortable walking shoes for the many miles your feet will take you in this fascinating city. In addition to the many family activities mentioned above, New York City is home to some of the world's finest parks, which also offer free recreational and cultural experiences to their visitors.

I highly recommend that you pay careful attention to try and plan activities that are free and activities that cost little money with those other can't miss activities in similar areas. This will save time (a very big commodity when traveling around New York City) and the money you would pay in transportation fees. Planning your trip ahead of time is one of the most economical decisions you can make. This doesn't mean that you can't be flexible if you see something when you get there, just that you have a pretty good idea of the things you really want to do balanced with the reality of the budget with which you have to do them all. The most important thing to do is have fun!

Five Famous Movie Homes

Five Famous Movie Homes

Five Famous Movie Homes

Many homes are made famous by the individuals that own them, but let's take a closer look at several unique properties already recognized by thousands of people because of their cameo roles in well-known films and television shows. Some of these A-list locations are prolific, making appearances in several popular movies and TV shows over the last few decades. Other homes go the "Daniel Day-Lewis route" and only appear in one or two projects, but theyre absolutely integral to the plot, setting, and production design.

Its time to ditch those glitzy maps to the stars and join us for a tour of the homes that remind LA residents that the spirit of Tinseltown is alive, well, and flowing throughout the city.

The Sheats-Goldstein House

You may recall the Sheats-Goldstein House from its appearances in recent films like Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle and The Big Lebowski, where, yes, the rug really did tie everything together; but interior design is far from the standout feature in this glass and concrete residence built into the side of a canyon. Located in Beverly Crest, the Sheats-Goldstein House offers a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, FOX Studios, and downtown LA. Its no surprise the owner, James Goldstein, has entertained a full slate of household names, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Jay-Z and Rihanna.

Though the Sheats-Goldstein House can be seen in relatively older films, its popularity has soared recently. NPR profiled the property for a story last year, and the home was recently donated to the LA County Museum of Art.

2900-2912 Griffith Park Boulevard

Were cheating a little bit here, since this isnt one propertybut twelve separate cottages. However, the intriguingly strange history of these residences simply cant be ignored. How many homes can you think of that are so uniquely designed that they can serve as inspiration for Disney animators and David Lynch?

The Griffith Park cottages in the Los Feliz neighborhood were once located around the corner from Disneys animation studios in the 1930s. Back then, the homes featured gnarled, jagged wood ceilings that inspired the artistic design of the dwarf cottages in the 1937 release of Snow White. Metal roofing contractors werent as prominent back then, and its a shame because one of the cottages burned down in the winter of 1978 because of its reliance on wood shingles. The properties have rebounded in a big way since then, having served as the Sierra Bonita apartment complex in 2001s Mulholland Driveone of the most bizarre and unsettling filmssince the bizarre and unsettling David Lynch film that preceded it. If youre an eclectic film buff, the Griffith Park cottages should be at the top of your LA itinerary.

Spadena House (a.k.a. The Witchs House)

Not the moniker youd expect for a residence once used to shoot Clueless, but this homes history is the essence of Hollywood. Originally built in 1921, the property served as office and dressing room space for a nearby movie studio in Culver City. The Spadena House was designed by Harry Oliver, an art director that worked on 30 films from 1919-1938. Later, the home was relocated to its current Beverly Hills location.

The 3,500-square-foot estate has been described by architects as the Hansel and Gretel house because of its storybook-like features, including pointed, steep-sloping roofs and a surrounding pond that resembles a moat. Its current namesake comes from the family that first inhabited it: the Spadenas.

Ennis House

Are you a sci-fi/horror fan? Familiar with Blade Runner, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and House on Haunted Hill? If so, Ennis House is right up your alley. If not, you may want to rethink the first question. On paper, Ennis House only amounted to one of the 1,000 constructions completed by famed American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, but this residence, by far, has the most unique design of the other homes profiled.

Located in Los Feliz, Ennis House is hard to miss because of its eye-grabbing Mayan Revival architecture. The property is built with tens-of-thousands of etched, concrete blocks. Some note that the block etchings resemble the letter G and hypothesize that this could be a reference to the Masonic Order that Wright affiliated with. All secretive religious order intrigue aside, Ennis House is undeniably beautiful on the surface. Today, the property is appraised at $3.8 milliona far cry from the $300,000 needed to build it in 1924.

Alfred F. Rosenheim Mansion (a.k.a. Murder House)

Luckily, the Rosenheim Mansion wasnt given its name for the reasons youre thinking. In fact, this residence, originally built in 1902, served as the fictional Murder House in the popular TV series, American Horror Story. There are so many astounding things about this homes history that its difficult to pinpoint a favorite factoid. For example, whats more fascinating? The fact that the Rosenheim Mansion is known as Murder House and once served as a set for the show, Dexter, or the fact that its currently listed as an Airbnb rental?

The history of 1120 Westchester Place is vast, contradictory, and ensnaring, so even though its a cardinal sin in every horror movie, you should run to the Murder Housenot away.

Farmington CT Historic Homes Hill-Stead House And Museum

Wealthy industrialist Alfred Pope built the Hill-Stead House and Museum between 1898 and 1908 as a retirement home for showcasing their exceptional collection of French Impressionist masterpieces and for entertaining their many noteworthy guests.

The house was built to the design their daughter, Theodate Pope Riddle, atop a hill facing northwest with splendid panoramic views of Connecticut's Farmington River Valley and is considered one of the finest examples of Colonial Revival architecture in New England.

Theodate went to school in Farmington, fell in love with the area, and persuaded her father who had earned a fortune in his Cleveland iron foundry business to acquire the real estate and build the home to her specifications in a unique collaboration with the renown architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White.

The two-story white 33,000-square-foot Colonial Revival house was built to mimic the style of the great 18th century farmsteads. It has five bays, a central entrance, low wings, and twin chimneys on a gabled roof. 30 ft mature willow trees were brought in by horses to make the house look as though it had been there since the 1700's, seamlessly blending the house on the hill with the agrarian landscape and original farm buildings on the estate.

The grounds were laid out to take the greatest advantage of the 152 hilltop acres with sunken gardens and reflecting ponds. The original landscaping was by Warren Manning, and included a 6 hole golfway with the ponds being the water hazards.

Since the time of its building, the Hill-Stead House has been packed with one of the finest collections of French Impressionistic Art in America now on display as a museum open to the public. Alfred and Alda Pope began collecting French Impressionistic Art Masterpieces during a grand tour of Europe in 1888, acquiring Claude Monet's View of the Bay and Alps at Antibes. Their collection grew to include many important paintings by Monet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, James M. Whistler and Mary Cassatt, as well as hundreds of works on paper and Japanese woodblock prints.

The house was built as a planned exhibition of the art they had collected. Alfred and Ada Pope together with their daughter Theodate, who married career-diplomat husband John Wallace Riddle, entertained many of the days most esteemed guests including authors, artists, poets, and presidents.

Henry James the famous novelist wrote of his visit to Hill-Stead in 1904 ".... a great new house on a hilltop that overlooked the most composed of communities; a house apparently conceived -- and with great felicity -- on the lines of a magnified Mount Vernon, and in which an array of modern 'impressionistic' pictures, mainly French, wondrous examples of Manet, of Degas, of Claude Monet, of Whistler, of other rare recent hands, treated us to the momentary effect of a large slippery sweet inserted, without a warning, between the compressed lips of half-conscious inanition...no proof of the sovereign power of art could have been, for the moment, sharper...it was like the sudden trill of a nightingale, lord of the hushed evening."

Theodate inherited the house upon her parents passing, and prior to her own death in 1946 willed Hill-Stead Museum as a memorial to her parents and "for the benefit and enjoyment of the public". She directed that both the house and its contents remain intact, not to be moved, lent, or sold. This has resulted in the preservation of the estate in a manner remarkably unchanged since its owners created and left it with 19 rooms now open to the public packed with antiques and one of the most stunning collections of art in North America.

Today the Hill-Stead House is a National Historic Landmark with over 45,000 visitors a year enjoying the tours, lectures, poetry festivals and school activities. The estates also include an 18th Century Farmhouse, an Arts & Crafts Carriage Barn, woodland trails and a theater built in 1917 to show motion pictures to the Farmington community. It is a stop on the Connecticut Art Trail, a member of Connecticut's Historic Gardens and an official project for Save America's Treasures.

Hill-Stead House and Museum is located atop 152 beautiful hilltop acres at 35 Mountain Road, in Farmington, Connecticut 06032. The telephone number is: 860-677-4787. For more information including the hours the estate is open to the public please visit the Hills-Stead House and Museum website at http://www.hillstead.org

Famous Athletes Who Engage in Alternative Medicine

Over 2.5 billion dollars have been spent by the U.S. government to test the effectiveness of alternative medicine. However, very few seem to be effective.

Alternative medicine generally involves therapies or products which claim to provide health benefits, but they are largely unproven or nearly impossible to prove. There are even many forms of alternative medicine which cause great harm; for instance, the Black Salve, a product which claims to cure skin cancer instead severely destroys the skin and leaves behind a black scar. People have been severely disfigured due to the Black Salve.

Regardless, most forms of alternative medicine don't reach this level of severity. Acupuncture, for instance, has had many scientific studies dedicated to it and though many of these studies suggest that the pain relief is due to a placebo effect, there are a few which support it. Acupuncture is one of the most popular forms of alternative medicine today and used by many athletes:

NFL Fullback Uses Acupuncture

Tony Richardson is a hall of famer NFL fullback - considered one of the best fullbacks in history. Richardson suffered severely bruised ribs during the playoff season in 2010.

Being in intense pain made it nearly impossible for him to be in blocking stance. Instead of giving in and riding the bench throughout the entire playlist, he decided to try acupuncture before the first match.

After the treatment which involved around 80 needles, Richardson was able to play the entire game with minimal pain from the bruised ribs. This led to over 30 NFL athletes to use acupuncture as part of their recovery. Other athletes who use acupuncture are NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali.

MMA Former Champion Engages in Urine Therapy

One of the most beloved champions in his era - Lyoto Machida, a karate practitioner and MMA cage fighter actively engages in urine therapy - the act of drinking your own urine every day.

Once again, there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of urine therapy, but according to Machida's father, the urine acts as a cleansing agent. He says that not all the food you eat gets out, but drinking urine helps to flush it out of the system.

The reason Machida began to engage in urine therapy was also due to a cough he had for several weeks. He had tried all sorts of medicine, but the cough wouldn't go away. That was when his father introduced him to urine therapy. After several days of drinking his urine, his cough went away.

Machida's father compares urine therapy to vaccines. He mentions that sometimes a vaccine will involve injecting a milder form of the disease into the system. He says that by drinking urine, it sort of acts like a vaccine.

Urine therapy isn't limited to drinking your own urine. There are also cosmetic uses for it too including massaging one's gum or skin with synthetic urine. Other athletes who engage in this activity are boxing champ Juan Manuel Mrquez and baseball player Moiss Alou.

Bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger Promotes Chiropractic

Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous actor and bodybuilder has been seen promoting chiropractic care. Schwarzenegger says that he doesn't just recommend chiropractic - he says that it's a necessity.

Chiropractic involves the diagnosis and treatment of muscle and skeletal disorders - in particular back pain. Chiropractic along with acupuncture is one of the most mainstream forms of alternative medicine. Whilst there is not much evidence in support of acupuncture, several studies have shown chiropractic to be a possible treatment method for back pain. There is also a lot of conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic care for other injuries.

Each year, billions of dollars is spent on chiropractic services. Chiropractic practitioners form the third largest medical profession - after doctors and dentists. Experts have even estimated that 90% of world class athletes use chiropractic care to help prevent injuries and improve performance.

Arnold says that he believes every family should seek a chiropracter, because he it's better than going to a hospital to receive shots and drugs for injuries. Other endorsers of chiropractic are golfer Tiger Woods, boxer Evander Holyfield and NFL player Jerry Rice.

FACEBOOK LEAD GENERATION THE BEST WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT

Facebook is a great place to be individually or as a business! When you take your business online especially Facebook, you get vast opportunities to boost its success. When it comes to lead generation, Facebook has a treasure of options to garner the best quality leads. Here are the top ways to help you with the same:

Put up exciting contests:
Achievements are loved by all no matter what scale or size. Putting up a contest is one of the many ways to help your customers achieve or win something that they want.

You can cleverly take an advantage of this by putting up contests on your Facebook page. You can then mention requirements to win the contest. These requirements should include:

i) liking the page

ii) commenting on the contest post

iii) signing up for your newsletter

This will help boost your reach, inflate your engagement and hence help make your lead generation efforts more successful.

Create and then use lead forms to your advantage:
Before you design a lead form, you need to realize that the website visitors today are busier and more impatient than they ever were. So, its important that you cut the crap and be precise in everything that you do.

In other words, create a lead form that contains just the most important questions that you truly need. This would help keep your lead form short yet helpful. People would readily fill the form and once that done you have to make sure that you use this information to your benefit. Follow up with your leads in an appropriate manner for the best results.

Leverage Facebook Lead ads:
For those who have little or no idea, Facebooks native Lead Ads are a great way to garner information that Facebook already knows about the user in a mobile-optimized experience.

You can effectively use these ads to boost your lead generation efforts without bothering the users. In other words, the users dont have to retype their details several times as Facebook itself does that for them. The social media platform then passes the details to you real time via their API and CRM & ESP integrations.

Or you may go for Canvas ads as well:
Whats a Canvas ad?

Well, its a microsite that is entirely contained within the Facebook mobile experience. It is a way of gathering leads without the aid of any landing page. It resembles a Facebook lead generation campaign form. The only difference is that you dont have to do much in working on the whole thing as the shell is pre-built for you.

A Canvas ad simply allows you to drag and drop assets into the pre-built shell so as to create an entire custom ad unit. This is a highly effective way to boost your lead generation efforts and ensure greater customer engagement.

Create a dedicated tab on your Facebook page:
Yes! Thats possible.

You can do that!

You can easily add a tab to your Facebook page that deals only with email and contact information capture. You can then use this button to your benefit by offering enticing deals in exchange for receiving emails. This is a great way to attract leads.

Employ these strategies and see your lead generation efforts giving you the best results.
